Hercules, Contra Costa County
Hercules is named for a brand of dynamite. The California Powder Works moved its plant to this stretch of San Pablo Bay shoreline in 1881, and the company town incorporated in 1900. During World War I the factory was the largest producer of TNT in the country. Explosives gave way to fertilizer and then to housing, and a few buildings of the old works remain near the waterfront.
